Etymology: < Italian gianduja, gianduia a soft chocolate confection flavoured with hazelnuts (1883 or earlier as gianduia) < Gianduia, Gianduja, the name of a stock character in commedia dell'arte and Italian puppetry depicted as a jovial Piedmontese peasant with a fondness for wine (1804; compare Italian regional (Piedmont) Giandouja, Giandoja).The name of the dramatic character is usually said to represent a contraction of Italian regional (Piedmont) Giôan d'la dôja, lit. ‘John of the jug or tankard’, in allusion to the flagon of wine with which he is usually depicted. The character was used in the mid 19th century in various political satires as a symbol of the region of Piedmont and of its capital Turin, where the chocolate confection was first produced.
