Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Swedish gräshoppa grasshopper, locust (Swedish gräshoppa ), Old Danish græshoppe , græshop grasshopper (Danish græshoppe ) < the Germanic base of grass n.1 + the Germanic base of hop v.1; compare grasshopper n. and the Germanic parallels cited at that entry.Old English -hoppa (weak masculine) and -hoppe (weak feminine) are regularly formed < hoppian hop v.1 Compare similarly formed gærsstapa grasshopper, locust (compare step v.), which is more frequently attested in Old English. The existence of (unattested) continental West Germanic cognates is perhaps suggested by the West Germanic parallels cited at grasshopper n., if these are taken as resulting from remodelling (with -er suffix1) of earlier forms; compare the currency of both form types in English and Swedish. However, the late date of attestation of the continental West Germanic parallels of grasshopper n. makes this assumption very uncertain. Recent α. forms perhaps reflect shortening < grasshopper n. rather than continuity from early modern English use. Use translating Latin locusta. In early use frequently translating classical Latin locusta in biblical and related contexts; compare discussion of the meaning of the word in these contexts at locust n.
Now rare (now chiefly North American).
A locust; (more widely) a grasshopper.In quot. c11751: (perhaps) a cicada, cf. cicada n.
