Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin abatuda, abatuta.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin abatuda, variant of abatuta (in e.g. moneta abatuda , moneta abatuta , moneta abbatuda clipped money (12th cent.); compare quot. 1848), use as adjective of past participle of abattere to debase a mintage (see abate v.1). Compare Middle French abatu , past participle of abatre to clip (coins), to remove (currency) from circulation (see abate v.1).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
