Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French girolle.

Etymology: < French girolle (1513 in Middle French), probably ultimately < classical Latin gyrus gyrus n. (with allusion to the shape of its cap), although the details of the morphology and the likely historical development are disputed; perhaps an adaptation (with remodelling of the ending after -olle , variant of -ole , diminutive suffix: see -ole suffix¹) of Old Occitan giroilla type of edible mushroom (14th cent.; probably ultimately < classical Latin gyrus + -cula -cula suffix).

An edible woodland mushroom, Cantharellus cibarius (family Cantharellaceae), found in Eurasia and North America, with a yellow, funnel-shaped body and a twisted cap, and having a fruity aroma and a mild peppery taste; = chanterelle n.²
