Etymology: < way n.1 + fare n.1, after wayfaring adj. In sense 2 after classical Latin viāticum viaticum n.; with this use compare earlier wayfaring meat (compare quot. ?1546 at wayfaring n. Compounds 1).Compare also Old English weg-fōr travelling, journey ( < way n.1 + fore n.).
Now archaic and rare.
