单词 gingelly
释义

gingellyn.

Brit. /ˈdʒɪn(d)ʒəli/, U.S. /ˈdʒɪndʒəli/
Forms: 1500s jenjoli, 1600s gingelie, 1600s gingerle, 1700s gingelle, 1700s gingerly, 1700s–1800s gingeli, 1700s–1800s gingely, 1800s gengeley, 1800s gingellie, 1800s gingili, 1800s gingilie, 1800s–1900s jinjili, 1800s– gingelli, 1800s– gingelly.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish genjoli.
Etymology: Apparently < Spanish †genjoli (1519 in the passage translated in quot. a1544), apparently aphetic < †agenjoli, variant of ajonjolí (c1250 as ajonjulí) < Spanish Arabic al-jonjolī < Arabic al the + Spanish Arabic jonjolī, jonjolīl, variant of Arabic (literary) juljulān, (chiefly colloquial) jiljilān, juljalān sesame.Compare (from different variants of the Arabic word, and without the article) Portuguese gergelim (15th cent.: see sergelim n.), Italian †giuggiolena (a1547; chiefly regional (southern), also as (Sicily) giuggiulena , (Calabria) giurgiolena ). Compare also ( < Italian) post-classical Latin gingolena (1586 or earlier) and (with remodelling of the suffix after Middle French -ine -ine suffix1) Middle French, French †jugioline (1538), French †gingeoline (1690). The usual word for sesame in Hindi is til (see til n.1); Hindi jinjalī, which has sometimes been taken to be related, is apparently borrowed from a European language, perhaps English. Compare also the former place name Gingalee, Gingerlee, etc. (1645 as Gingallee, or earlier), denoting a part of the east coast of India (apparently between the Godavari estuary and Orissa), perhaps so called on account of its trade in sesame.
Now chiefly South Asian.
Sesame oil; (also) the sesame plant, Sesamum indicum. Frequently attributive, esp. in gingelly oil.
