A member of the International Organization of Good Templars (originally the Independent Order of Good Templars), an organization promoting temperance or total abstinence from alcohol.The original order was established in Utica, New York in 1851, on the model of freemasonry. It was introduced into the United Kingdom in 1868 and subsequently spread to Europe and other parts of world. It no longer operates on the masonic model.
