Etymology: Of obscure origin: perhaps < Old French giber , explained by Godefroy (who refers to modern dialect giber to kick) as meaning to shake, transitive and intransitive (‘secouer, s'agiter’), but in the examples apparently meaning ‘to handle roughly in sport’, ‘to use horseplay’. Compare jib v.2
