Etymology: Apparently < GH n. at G n. Initialisms + rel- (in releasing adj.) + -in suffix1.Coined by M. Kojima and colleagues (compare quot. 1999); the superficial resemblance to the Indo-European base of grow v. was probably noticed after the initial coinage.
Physiology.
A peptide hormone, made predominantly in the stomach, which stimulates the secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland and has a variety of other effects, including the enhancement of appetite and food intake.
