Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Gelisol.

Etymology: In sense 1 < German Gelisol (C. Troll 1948, in Erdkunde 2 6/2), shortened < Pergelisol pergelisol n. In sense 2 directly < classical Latin gelāre to freeze (see geal v.) + -i- connective + -sol comb. form. Compare earlier pergelisol n.
