Etymology: < Ecclesiastical Latin gehenna, < Hellenistic Greek γέεννα , rendered ‘hell’ in the English New Testament (also γέεννα τοῦ πυρός ‘gehenna of fire’, rendered ‘hell fire’). In medieval Latin the word was used transferred for judicial torture: compare gehenne n.The Greek γέεννα was < post-Biblical Hebrew ihinnōm hell, place of fiery torment for the dead (whence Arabic jahannam ), a figurative use of the place-name which occurs also in the fuller form i ben Hinnōm , ‘the valley of the son of Hinnom’, denoting a place near Jerusalem where, according to Jeremiah xix. 5, etc., children were burnt in sacrifice to Baal or Molech.
