Origin: A borrowing from French; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: French armet.
Etymology: < Middle French armet (a1442; French (now hist.) armet ) < Italian elmetto (a1342; also c1362 as †almetto ; < elmo helmet (see helm n.1) + -etto -et suffix1), with alteration by association with Middle French arme weapon (see arms n.).In form ermyt perhaps influenced by helmet n.
Now historical.
A helmet of Italian origin introduced in the early 15th cent., consisting of a steel skull extending at the rear to form a narrow neck guard, wide hinged cheekpieces overlapping at the chin, and a small hinged pointed visor.
