Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Genista , -ein suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Genista, genus name (see genista n.) + -ein suffix.The name genisteine (compare genisteine) is also used for an unrelated alkaloid similar to sparteine.
Chemistry and Pharmacology.
A pale yellow isoflavone derivative originally obtained from dyer's broom ( Genista tinctoria) and also present as a glycoside in soybeans and other leguminous plants, which has antioxidant, oestrogenic, and other physiological effects in humans and animals. Also called prunetol.Systematic name: 4', 5, 7-trihydroxyisoflavone; C15H10O5.

1899 A. G. Perkin & F. G. Newbury in Proc. Chem. Soc. 24 June 179 The Genista tinctoria (dyer's broom)..contains two colouring matters, the first identical with the luteolin of weld (Reseda luteola), and the second, a new colouring matter, genistein.
1943 A. H. Cook tr. F. Mayer Chem. Nat. Coloring Matters iv. 195 Genistein..is contained in dyer's broom (Genista tinctoria), together with luteolin, and in soybeans (Soja hispida) as the 7-glucoside.
1953 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 871 Genistein (5:7:4′-trihydroxyisoflavone) is a pro-œstrogen, responsible for most of the œstrogenic activity of subterranean clover.
2011 Daily Tel. 14 Jan. 4/1 Researchers..said one pill a day of genistein, a natural chemical found in soy, seemed to slow or stop prostate cancer spreading.
