Etymology: < German Pyromorphit ( J. F. L. Hausmann Handb. der Mineralogie (1813) 1090) < pyro- pyro- comb. form + ancient Greek μορϕή form (see -morph comb. form) + German -it -ite suffix¹, so called because the globule produced by melting it assumes a crystalline form on cooling.

A lead-containing mineral found in the oxidized zones of lead deposits and forming transparent to translucent, often barrel-shaped crystals, most commonly green or brown.Pyromorphite is a chloride and phosphate of lead, Pb₅(PO₄)₃Cl. Crystal system: hexagonal.
