单词 genipat
释义

genipatn.

Brit. /ˈdʒɛnɪˌpat/, U.S. /ˈdʒɛniˌpæt/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French genipat.
Etymology: < Middle French genipat (1558 in the passage translated in quot. 1568, apparently an early form of French génipa : see genip n.1), ultimately < Tupi yani'pawa genipap n.The origin of the final -t in Middle French (which would not have been pronounced in the 16th cent.) is unclear. It may have arisen by analogy with nouns ending in -at -ate suffix1 (after final -t had become silent in these). Alternatively, it may reflect an earlier (unattested) form with final -t in Tupi. Dutch †genipat (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598) is also < French.
Now historical.
= genipap n.
