单词 curlew
释义

curlewn.

Brit. /ˈkəːl(j)uː/, U.S. /ˈkərˌlu/
Forms: α. Middle English curlu, curleeu, corlue, corolu, kurlu, Middle English corlew(e, Middle English–1500s curlewe, Middle English–1600s curlue, Middle English kyrlewe, corelewe, 1600s courlieu, 1600s–1700s curliew, 1600s–1800s curlieu, 1700s kerlew, Middle English– curlew; also β. Middle English corlure, curlure, Middle English curlowyr.
Etymology: Identical with Old French courlieus (13th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), corlys (16th cent. in Littré), courlis, corlis, corlieu (Cotgrave), modern French courlieu, courlis, in French dialect querlu, kerlu, corlu, corleru; compare also medieval Latin (a1250) corlivus, Italian chiurlo. The French name is held by etymologists to be an imitation of the cry of the bird; but if so, it was apparently assimilated to the word corliu (11th cent.), courlieu, curleu, corli courier, messenger, derivative of courir to run. Found in verse with stress curˈlew in 15th and 19th centuries.
