释义

georgicn.adj.

Brit. /ˈdʒɔːdʒɪk/, U.S. /ˈdʒɔrdʒɪk/
Forms: 1600s–1700s georgick, 1600s– georgic.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin geōrgicus.
Etymology: < classical Latin geōrgicus (of literary works) dealing with agriculture < ancient Greek γεωργικός agricultural, occupied or skilled in farming, (noun) farmer < γεωργός husbandman ( < γῆ earth (see geo- comb. form) + -ϝοργός < an ablaut variant (o -grade) of ἔργον work: see erg n.1) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare French géorgique , adjective (1374 in an apparently isolated attestation in Middle French as georgique , subsequently from 1771), Italian georgica , noun (1562 denoting poetry concerning agriculture), georgico , adjective (1759).
