Forms: 1800s gaduine, 1800s– gaduin.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: German Gaduin; Latin Gaduinum.
Etymology: < German Gaduin (1844 in the source of quot. 1849) or its etymon post-classical Latin Gaduinum (L. J. de Jongh 1843, in Disquisitio comparativa chemico-medica de tribus olei jecoris aselli speciebus iv. 18), irregularly (see note) < scientific Latin Gadus , genus name (see gade n.) + -inum -in suffix1.In his 1843 publication L. J. de Jongh consistently gives the genitive of Latin Gadus as Gadui (after nouns of the 4th declension), where the expected genitive would be Gadi (after nouns of the 2nd declension).

1844 Lancet 1 June 313/1 The substance to which M. Jongh has given the name of gaduine is a peculiar organic body, having the formula, in an isolated state, of C35, H46, O9.
1864 H. Watts Dict. Chem. Gaduin, a peculiar brown substance contained in cod liver oil (De Jongh).
1895 F. P. Möller Cod-liver Oil & Chem. p. cix/1 Valeric, capric, and gadinic acids, gaduin, ammonia, trimethylamine, alkalöids, and such substances are partly decomposition-products.
1932 C. E. Harbison Our Dogs iii. 53 Cod liver oil, a fixed oil from the livers of the codfish, contains gaduin, olein and other glycerins.
