Origin: A borrowing from Romani. Etymons: Romani gadžo, gadži.
Etymology: Partly < Romani gadžo non-Romani man ( < Prakrit *gajjha domestic < Sanskrit gṛhya house-dwelling, domestic < gṛha house (see garbhagriha n.) + -ya , suffix forming adjectives); and partly (in β. forms) < Romani gadži non-Romani woman, feminine corresponding to gadžo . Compare earlier gorger n.2Compare the following slightly earlier example of the Romani word in an English context:1878 Edinb. Rev. July 140 In speaking of themselves to strangers (gadjé, those not of their people), gypsies commonly use some name current..in the unfriendly outside world.The plural form gadje reflects the Romani plural gadže ; the English singular form gadje is probably a generalized use of this.
