单词 galloon
释义

galloonn.

Brit. /ɡəˈluːn/, U.S. /ɡəˈlun/
Forms: 1600s galloune, galoone, galloom(e, galoom(e, 1600s–1700s galloone, 1600s– galoon, galloon. Also in French form 1800s– galon.
Etymology: < French galon, verbal noun, from the verb galonner . The noun first appears in the 17th cent., the verb is as old as the 12th cent., and originally means to dress the hair with gold bands or other ribbons. Its origin is uncertain; a connection with the root of gallant adj. and n. seems possible; the Spanish galon and Italian gallone are probably adopted < French.
a. A kind of narrow, close-woven ribbon or braid, of gold, silver, or silk thread, used for trimming articles of apparel; a trimming of this material. (See quot. 1882.)
