Etymology: < classical Latin Amazonicus of or connected with the Amazons, Amazonian (apparently only in Pliny, Suetonius, and Mela) < Hellenistic Greek Ἀμαζονικός < ancient Greek Ἀμαζον- , Ἀμαζών Amazon n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier Amazonical adj. and Amazonian adj.¹Compare French †amazonique (1575 in Middle French), Spanish amazonico (a1428), Portuguese amazônico (a1776), and also (with different suffix: see -ish suffix¹), Dutch amazoons, †amazonisch (1582), German amazonisch (1548).
