Etymology: < gare, variant of gore n.2 + brede n.2Widely attested earlier as a medieval field name, apparently with the meaning ‘broad strip of land in the triangular corner of the common field’, e.g. Garbred, Lambrigg, Westmorland (1205), Garebrede, Radfield, Cambridgeshire (1251), Garebrede, South Erpingham, Norfolk (1322), Garbred, West Riding, Yorkshire (1323), etc.; compare also Garbrade, Nottinghamshire (c1200), Garbrades, Irthington, Cumberland (c1240), Gorebrode, Nottinghamshire (c1250), Garebrode, Oundle, Northamptonshire (1261), etc.
English regional (Yorkshire). Obsolete.
A portion or piece of land.
