Etymology: apparently < Old French gaude weld + -y suffix1; the form gaude may be the Old French word adopted and used attributively.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈgaudy.
Obsolete exc. archaic.
Only in gaudy-green n. green dyed with weld, yellowish green.In the first quot. gaudi of grene may be a mistake for gaudi grene, or the word may be a noun evolved from the combination.
