Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably ultimately < French garde guard n. or garder guard v., perhaps with reference to the (lower) arms used as protection in a fight (compare Middle French garde (particular) protective element of a suit of armour (15th cent.), French garde defensive stance (17th cent.)); in later use perhaps reinforced by guard n. (compare later guard n. 3).Scottish Gaelic gàirdean arm, hand (17th cent. or earlier) is apparently < Scots (with a Scottish Gaelic suffix, either diminutive or singulative).
