Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin fulvus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin fulvus reddish-yellow, tawny, brown, of uncertain origin (see note) + -ous suffix. Compare slightly earlier fulve adj.The suffix -vus is common in Latin colour adjectives; compare e.g. flāvus yellow (see flavo- comb. form), helvus light bay (see helvine adj.
