单词 frogfish
释义

frogfishn.

Brit. /ˈfrɒɡfɪʃ/, U.S. /ˈfrɔɡˌfɪʃ/, /ˈfrɑɡˌfɪʃ/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, frogfishes.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: frog n.1, fish n.1
Etymology: < frog n.1 + fish n.1, on account of the appearance of the fishes so denoted. Compare toad-fish n. Perhaps compare Middle French, French †grenouille de mer, †grenouille pêcheuse (both 1555), French †grenouille pescheresse (1611 in Cotgrave), all denoting the anglerfish.
Originally: the European anglerfish, Lophius piscatorius. Later more widely: any of numerous anglerfishes of the order Lophiiformes; spec. any of those belonging to the family Antennariidae, which are small, globular, cryptically coloured, and found chiefly in warm shallow waters. Also: a toadfish of the allied order Batrachoidiformes. Cf. frog n.1 2, fishing frog at fishing adj. 1.
