单词 fumitory
释义

fumitoryn.

Brit. /ˈfjuːmᵻt(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˈfjuməˌtɔri/
Forms: α. Middle English fumeter(e, Middle English, 1500s fumeterre, Middle English–1600s fumiterre, Middle English fumytere, (Middle English fumtere, fymterre), 1500s femiter, fermitar. β. 1500s fume(n)torie, femetary, fumitarie, fumitorie, ( fumyterry, fumytory), 1600s fumetery, fumitery, 1700s fumetory, 1500s– fumitory.
Etymology: < Old French fumeterre, < medieval Latin fūmus terrae lit. ‘smoke of the earth’; so called because ‘it spryngyth…out of the erthe in grete quantyte as smoke dooth other fumosyte that comyth of the erthe’ (Trevisa, tr. Barth. De P.R. xvii. lxix). In the 16th cent. the ending was confused with -ary suffix1, -ory suffix1. The medieval Latin name is also represented by Provençal fumterra, and corruptly by Italian fummosterno; translated forms are German erdrauch, Swedish jordrök, English earth-smoke; compare Spanish fumaria, Portuguese fumaria, whence the modern Latin botanical name.
a. A plant of the genus Fumaria (or the related Corydalis), usually F. officinalis.
