Forms: In 1600s frettish.
Etymology: Connected with Old French fraitis (Godefroy), said of capitals of columns, and apparently rendering ‘quasi in modum retis’ in 1 Kings vii. 17. Compare fret n.1, fret v.2If this be a past participle, the English verb is probably < Old French *fraitiss-, *fraitir. If it be an adjective < Latin type ? *fracticius, the English verb is probably formed upon it.
Obsolete.
