Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Apophänie.
Etymology: < German Apophänie ( K. Conrad Die Beginnende Schizophrenie (1958) ii. 46) < ancient Greek ἀποϕαίνειν to show, display, declare ( < ἀπο- apo- prefix + ϕαίνειν to show: see -phane comb. form) + German -ie -ia suffix1.Compare French apophénie (1959 or earlier).
1. Psychiatry. The baseless or irrational attribution of great or revelatory significance to an external event or internal experience, occurring during the development of delusional perception in schizophrenia; (also) the stage of schizophrenia in which this occurs; = apophany n. Now rare.

Psychiatry i. 19 Conrad..described the delusional experience as having four stages starting from a delusional mood.., leading via the delusional idea which he called apophenia.., to the person's efforts to make sense of the experience by revising his whole view of the world.
