Etymology: < Anglo-Norman funel rope, cord (early 13th cent.; first half of the 12th cent. in figurative use in sense ‘bond, link’) < classical Latin fūnāle torch of rope soaked in wax or tallow, use as noun of neuter of fūnālis made of rope < fūnis rope (see funis n.) + -ālis -al suffix1; compare -el suffix2.
