Etymology: < poly- comb. form + saccharide n., after German Polysaccharid (1888 or earlier), probably itself after French polysaccharide (1862 or earlier).
Chemistry.
A carbohydrate such as starch, cellulose, or glycogen, in which the molecule consists of a number of monosaccharide residues or their simple derivatives linked together, usually in a chain of high molecular weight. Also: such a structure forming part of a larger molecule.
