Etymology: < post-classical Latin fundatrix (attested in an inscription; from 13th cent. in British sources), feminine form corresponding to classical Latin fundātor foundator n. < fundāt- , past participial stem of fundāre found v.2 + -trīx -trix suffix. Compare earlier foundress n.1In sense 2 after French fondatrice (1878 or earlier in this sense) or fundatrix (1879 or earlier in this sense), perhaps after German Stammutter (see stem mother n. at stem n.1 Compounds 2). In plural form fundatrices after the Latin plural form. Compare the following earlier example of fundatrice ( < classical Latin fundātor foundator n. + -trice suffix; compare Middle French, French fondatrice (second half of the 16th cent. or earlier)):1516 in T. Baker Hist. College St. John, Cambr.
