Etymology: representing two distinct words: αOld English forðęncan ( < for- prefix1 + ðęncan to think v.2) = Old High German fordenchen (German verdenken ). β < for- prefix1 + Old English þyncan to seem (think v.1). Compare Middle High German verdunken and Old Norse forþykkja to displease.
Obsolete.
