Etymology: < French angélus (1652 (in the passage translated in quot. 1658 at sense 1) or earlier denoting the devotional exercise, 1694 denoting the ringing of the bells at the times for the devotion) < post-classical Latin angelus bell ringing as a sign for evening prayer (14th cent.), specific use of angelus angel n.; so called from the opening words of the prayer, Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae ‘the Angel of the Lord proclaimed to Mary’. Compare earlier Angelus Domini n.The use as noun denoting the devotional exercise is apparently not attested in post-classical Latin, where versiculi Angelus Domini etc. is used instead.
