单词 annoyment
释义

annoymentn.

Brit. /əˈnɔɪm(ə)nt/, U.S. /əˈnɔɪmənt/
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French anoiement ; annoy v., -ment suffix.
Etymology: Probably partly (i) < Middle French, anoiement annoyance (13th cent. in Old French as enuiement ; also in Middle French as anuiement ; < anoier , anuyer , enoyer , ennoyer , etc., to trouble, bore, irritate (see annoy v.) + -ment -ment suffix), and partly (ii) < annoy v. + -ment suffix. Compare noyment n. and earlier annoyance n.Earlier currency is perhaps shown by the following example (although, as Davis notes in his edition, the manuscript reading anoyntment is perhaps possible in the sense ‘extreme unction’):?a1525 (?a1475) Play Sacrament l. 583 in N. Davis Non-Cycle Plays & Fragm. (1970) 76 Coll. But, master, I pray yow, how dothe yowr pa[c]yent That ye had last vnder yowr medycament? Master Brundyche. I waraunt she neuer fele anoyntment [perhaps read anoyment]. Coll. Why, ys she in hyr graue?
