Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: agnominate v.
Etymology: Alteration of agnominate v., after post-classical Latin annominare, variant of adnominare to betroth, to name (see agnominate v.). Compare earlier nominate v. and annomination n. (in a different sense). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ănǫ·mineit) /əˈnɒmɪneɪt/.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To give a name to (something); spec. to call (something) by an alternative or additional name. Chiefly with double object, in passive. Cf. agnominate v.
