Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: box n.2, head n.1
Etymology: < box n.2 + head n.1The following earlier quot. shows a different word, a borrowing < Dutch boxhoofd (1670 in the passage translated), with remodelling of the second element after head n.1; the Dutch word is a variant of bokshoofd , literally ‘buck's head’ ( < the genitive of bok buck n.1 + hoofd head n.1), here denoting a geographical feature near Macao (perhaps a promontory):1671 J. Ogilby tr. O. Dapper et al. Atlas Chinensis 64 The twenty seventh the Zierikzee and Ter-Boede cast Anchor in the Evening near the Island of Macau, by the Box-Heads [Du. boxhoofden], being separated from the rest of the Fleet by Misty Weather.
1. Apparently: either some kind of archaeological artefact, or a part of a scimitar or dagger. Obsolete. rare.Apparently an isolated use.
