单词 wella
释义

wellaint.adv.

Forms: Old English wella, early Middle English wælla, early Middle English wælle, early Middle English wellen, Middle English wela, Middle English welay, Middle English wele, Middle English wella, Middle English wellay, Middle English welle.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Perhaps partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: well adv., lo int.1; wale int.
Etymology: Apparently < well adv. + lo int.1, perhaps partly (especially in sense A. 2) as an alteration of wale int. Compare also weila int., we int. Compare also Old English welgā , interjection (see well adv. and n.4).In Middle English, forms with reduced second syllable such as wele, welle can be difficult to distinguish from forms of well adv., and it is possible that they may instead show that word. The form wellen shows nunnation, a common feature of the language of the Caligula manuscript of Laȝamon’s Brut. The forms welay, wellay apparently show alteration of the second syllable after ay int. or wellaway int. With use as interjection in sense A. 1 compare well adv. 20, and see discussion at that entry.
Obsolete.
