Etymology: < post-classical Latin ante rem before the thing (6th cent. in Boethius) < classical Latin ante before (see ante- prefix) + rem , accusative of rēs res n.¹

Philosophy.

Prior to the existence of, or logically preceding, something else; spec. (of a universal) prior to the particular. Later also: of, relating to, or designating a philosophical theory (a form of realism n. 2) which holds that the universal is logically prior to, and capable of existing independently of, the particular. Also as adv. Cf. post rem adj., in re adv. 1b.Frequently as postmodifier.
