Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin anfractus, amfractus.
Etymology: < classical Latin anfractus (also amfractus) bend, curvature, circular motion or course, winding course, circuitous route, in classical Latin also in anatomical use (14th cent. in the passage translated in quot. ?a1425) < anfractus curved, bent ( < an- , am- about (see ambi- prefix) + fractus , past participle of frangere to break: see fracto- comb. form) + -tus, suffix forming verbal nouns. Compare Italian anfratto (1623; 1491 as †amphracto) and the following later isolated English passage, translating the Italian word:1995 W. Weaver tr. U. Eco Island of Day Before xxxii. 409 He..resumed floating along the edge of the barrier, following its rifts and anfracts [It. anfratti], past corridors of chalk.

A winding or sinuous passage or course; a turn, bend, or curve; (sometimes) spec. a sulcus of the brain (cf. anfractuosity n. 1b). Cf. anfractuosity n. 1a, anfracture n.
