Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian foderato, foderare.
Etymology: < Italian foderato (a1787 in this sense), past participle of foderare to sheathe < fodero sheath, case, related to Old French forre , fuerre (see note at fur n.1), ultimately reflecting a borrowing into Romance of the Germanic base of Old English foddor , fōdor sheath, case, container (see needlefodder n. and discussion at fodder n.). Compare the corresponding formation French fourré (1671 in this sense). N.E.D. (1897) gives the pronunciation as (fǫ·dĕreit) /ˈfɒdəreɪt/.
