Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French anete.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French anete, Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French anet, annet (French anet , aneth ) dill (13th cent.) < classical Latin anēthum , anētum dill < ancient Greek ἄνηθον (Aeolic ἄνητον ), of uncertain origin, perhaps < Ancient Egyptian inś.t , apparently denoting an unidentified spice. Compare anise n.Compare Old Occitan anet (c1220), Catalan anet (1472), Italian aneto (c1340), and also Spanish eneldo (14th cent. as †aneldo), Portuguese endro (1624; 1548 as †emdro), both < an unattested post-classical Latin diminutive *anethulum. It is unclear whether the following early examples should be taken as showing the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word, although the latter seems more likely (especially in quot. a1300):a1200 Glosses to De Viribus Herbarum of Macer (Vitell. C.iii) in Anglia (1974) 92 287 De aneto : anete.a1300 in T. Wright & R. P. Wülcker Anglo-Saxon & Old Eng. Vocab. (1884) I. 557 Anetum, i. anete, i. dile.
