Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Anentera , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Anentera, former order name given to certain infusoria having no intestinal canal (C. G. Ehrenberg 1832, in Abhandl. der Königlich Preussischen Akad. der Wissensch. zu Berlin 1830 35; < ancient Greek ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἔντερα bowels: see enteron n.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ̆ne·ntĕrəs) /æˈnɛntərəs/.
Zoology. Obsolete.
Characterized by or exhibiting absence of an intestinal tract.Used with reference to certain groups of protozoans and invertebrates.

1855 R. Owen Lect. Compar. Anat. Invertebr. Animals (ed. 2) ii. 24 Such species have no intestine, no anus, and are said to be anenterous.
1910 T. J. Parker & W. A. Haswell Text-bk. Zool. (ed. 2) I. vi. 313 In correspondence with the absence of mouth and anus there is no trace of enteric canal, the Acanthocephala resembling in this respect the Cestoda, the only other class of Metazoa which is entirely anenterous.
