Etymology: < Middle French difformité, diffourmité difference, alteration (14th cent.), divergence from a standard (early 15th cent.; French difformité , now only in senses relating to malformation, anomaly, etc.: see deformity n.) < post-classical Latin difformitas dissimilarity, diversity (frequently from c1250 in British sources; from 14th cent. in continental sources) < difformis difform adj. + classical Latin -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Italian difformità (a1320). Compare deformity n., which shows formal overlap with this word.
