Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: anthropo- comb. form, -tomy comb. form.
Etymology: < anthropo- comb. form + -tomy comb. form, after French anthropotomie (1750 (in the title of J. J. Sue Anthropotomie ou l'art de disséquer les muscles, les ligamens, les nerfs, the work referred to in quot. 1786) or earlier; now disused). Compare post-classical Latin anthropotomia (1743 in a German source, or earlier).
Now rare.
The science of dissecting the human body. Also: human anatomy, esp. as contrasted with comparative anatomy. Cf. zootomy n.
