Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: anthropophagus n., -ian suffix; Latin anthrōpophagus , -ian suffix.
Etymology: Irregularly < anthropophagus n. or its etymon classical Latin anthrōpophagus + -ian suffix, apparently after Carthaginian n.
Obsolete. rare.
A cannibal; = anthropophagus n.In quot. 1824 figurative: a ruthless or savage person.
