Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: fluo- comb. form, silicate n.
Etymology: < fluo- comb. form + silicate n., probably after German Fluosilicat (1815 in a paper by Berzelius, or earlier; now usually Fluosilikat) or its apparent etymon French fluosilicate (1814 or earlier in a German context (with reference to experiments by Gay-Lussac and Thénard), 1816 or earlier in a French context).
A salt of fluosilicic acid; (also) a compound that is both a fluoride and a silicate. Cf. fluorosilicate n. at fluoro- comb. form 1b.
