Etymology: < German Antholeucin (J. A. Buchner 1835, in a review of L. C. Marquart Die Farben der Blüthen (1835) in Repertorium für die Pharmacie 54 293) < Antho- antho- comb. form + ancient Greek λευκός white (see leuco- comb. form) + German -in -in suffix¹. The substance was first obtained by Marquart, but named by Buchner.
