Etymology: German, < the initials of the elements of fliegerabwehrkanone ‘pilot-defence-gun’.
a. An anti-aircraft gun; also (the usual sense in English), anti-aircraft fire. Also attributive. So flak-happy adj. mentally affected by flak (cf. bomb-happy adj. at bomb n. Compounds 2). flak jacket n. a protective jacket of heavy fabric containing metal strips or plates. flak ship n. a German anti-aircraft vessel.
