Origin: Either (i) a word inherited from Germanic. Or (ii) a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: representing Old English *flot (in flotsmeru floating grease), or < Old Norse flot (= Swedish flott ), < weak grade of root of fleet v.2 Compare flotesse n.
Now only Scottish.
